When my friend goes back her hometown in Taiping, she would stop by on her way back to buy some hiong piah (heong peah) biscuits for me and my family. Hiong piah is a type of biscuit baked using traditional charbroil method.
In the past, this biscuits contains lard (pork oil) as part of their maltose filling to enhance the taste. But now, it is not longer being used as part of the ingredients.
If my friend buys it direct from the source and meant for home consumption, the packing is very simple (can even buy the original and charcoal biscuit online):
But if it is meant as gift, then the packing would come in a more beautiful packaging complete with individual packs:
There are 2 types of hiong piah. The original (above) and the charcoal type (black colour) (below). The biscuits are now very popular- hence you need not travel all the way to Ipoh to buy them. Certain shops selling Chinese medicine or provision shops in the Klang Valley also sells these biscuits.
If you are going overseas to visit some Malaysian friends, you may want to consider buying this as a gift, or other much missed foodstuff like Ipoh White Coffee, premix cooking paste and Maggi mee.
The ingredients used to make the hiong piah: wheat flour, sugar, maltose, palm oil, onion, salt and sesame.

How to serve the hiong piah: It can be eaten directly preferably as fresh as possible. But for more delicious taste, you may choose to reheat in oven from 180°C or 200°C, bake in 2 to 3 minutes, next wait for 2 to 3 minutes or let it cool before serving.
