Macy and Nam Thong are some of the popular suppliers of sewing products like ribbons, wools, and other arts and craft items. Both are located in Jalan Sultan, along the same roll of shophouses:
Over the years, due to my interest in craft, I have spent a small fortune in both Macy and Nam Thong, another competing supplier located few doors away from Macy. The thing I don’t really like about shopping in Macy is that they will have the salesgirl follow you around- and if you do not buy much, the salesgirl may not look too happy. Sometimes, I actually wanted to look at the beads and ribbons in peace but it’s a bit tension when I go there….
Nam Thong also sell satin ribbons at reasonable price. They also supply festive items- as you see in the picture above, they have already start to sell laterns (tanglungs) for mooncake festival (falls on 22 Sept this year). Inside, they also sell Hari Raya decorations. Some of the festive decorations are in better quality compared to those sold in the markets and hypermarkets. Chinese based companies usually get their decorations here (when they do not want to buy usual the cheap looking ones from the market).
Another sewing shop, Syarikat Fah located along the main road (opposite Lai Fong kopitiam) also sell various ribbons and sewing items. I have bought some ribbons from here and they are a bit dusty- as the shop is very old and have no air condition.
Petaling Street also house a lot of suppliers of hair accessories, crystals, custom jewelries, handbags and stationeries. You need to go to the shops- often hidden behind the packed roadside stalls of Petaling Street. Like this shop that sell hair accessories, bags and other items at wholesale- in which night market sellers would usually source from here. I would buy the empty metal hair barrettes, hair bands, etc and then take back to add finishing touches to them- either using ribbon roses or beads. That was years ago….now I seldom could find time to do them anymore.
A number of shops selling swarovski beads can also be found if you really take time to walk and search. But becareful- a lot of shops sell imitations that looked like the real thing but is actually plastic. Initially I could not differenciate and wasted a lot of money on the imitations. Anyway, when swarovski beads were first introduced, they were so expensive. Over the years, the price has gone down. Go to a few shops and make comparisons before deciding where to buy from.
Most of these shops are closed on Sunday. But on Saturdays, they open at least half day- they are usually open even in the afternoon.
Macy was the only place I went to for craft items back in the 90s, when I was studying in KL. The yarn for the tablecloth and all other items which I crocheted then was all bought at Macy. Back then, it was a fun experience bcos there were no salesgirls following around.
Dear Dina, Macy was really the place all crafters go to for supplies. Now, many such shops have come up- some with more updated products and better pricing than Macy.
hi,
was wondering if you know where i can buy hot wire cutter to make styrofoam letters for deco.
thanks
Jacq, you can try multifilla.com- the store is located at Balakong- they seemed to have everything for craft works
hello.
does anyone knows that macy @ petaling street still open?
if yes, do anyone know if they open the store on sunday and operating time?
please reply me, cus i am going KL during end of sept..
thanks and regards
Dear Wendy,
If I am not mistaken, they are closed on Sunday. But Saturday they open until about 4pm.
Thanks a lot for your info.
I went to Petaling street early this year to get some linens and hopefully some craft supplies for sewing. I walked til the end of Petaling street with no much luck actually ((not a best price I think)), several fabrics stores sell cotton-linens at approx RM37/metre, two fabric shops near to Petaling street sell quality linen at approx RM48-68/metre, I found them slightly overpriced. Anyway, keen to know any good place to source the materials at cheaper price? Thanks.
Dear Bel,
My apologies- I am afraid I would not be able to advise you as I do not buy linen. Perhaps it is best bought during sales period- in which I believe about a week or two ago prior to Raya there would be sales. The next celebration would be Deepavali and then Christmas and usually the price would be reasonable.
Can i get Macy contact no?
Penny,
Their number is 603-2078 1459 which I found frm another blog.
How was the yarn price like? Arcylic? Wool? Cotton maybe can give some brand and price?

Sorry friend, not sure about this.
Hi Tan,
Yes, I think they do.
Hi Amnesty, so sorry I can’t help, I don’t know where to get studs and spikes in KL area.
Can any one tell me where to get silk organza and sew in crystals please.
Visiting k.L in August.
Thankyou,Claire australia
Dear Claire,
Firstly, welcome to Malaysia. You can try to get from Macy as featured in the article above. Or you can visit Masjid India area (located not far from Petaling Street – you need to get down from Masjid Jamek lrt) https://visit-malaysia.yinteing.com/2011/04/05/malay-wedding-gifts-supplier-in-kuala-lumpur/ Here there are some craft stores hidden in the back and they do sell organza. But for the crystals- I am not sure what type of crystals you are referring to…
hi,yin, i ll be in KL this weekend, may i know where can i find beads and others crafts supplies..? i just knew that Macy is closed til wednesday…i m so disappointed..
Hi Joe, welcome to KL. The usual handicraft stores would likely be closed on Sunday because it’s a public holiday. But on Saturday, some stores may open. Macy may be closed but you can check with Nam Thong, located just a few doors away. Also, walk around in Chinatown and you would find some hidden small stores. Masjid India (located behind Masjid Jamek LRT station) also have lots of shops selling beads but you need to be there early- as they may probably work half day. Happy shopping
hi yin..can you give me some direction if i want go to macy with LRT from BTS..??
Hi Tinta, if u take the LRT, stop at Pasar Seni station. From there, walk till you see Kotaraya on your left. At one of the traffic light junction- you see cars going into the road where there is Nandos Chicken and Guardian walk into that road- Macy is on your left after KFC.
owh..okay..thanks yin..:D
Hi Yin,
I want to get some swarovski beads (genuine crystal). Please recommend to me the shop.
Hi Sabrina
Previously I’ve managed to buy some genuine swarovski beads from one of the wholesale shop that is same roll with Popular book store in Petaling street. However, the price is not cheap. But unfortunately I do not have the address of the store.
Hi Yin
Do you know where i can bead my fabrics, either hand sewn or machine beaded in KL?
Hi Yin , just wondering if Macy sells leather cords , charms and rings ( like the one they use to make dreamcatcher ?) 🙂 Are the prices in Macy’s reasonable ? 😀
Dear Helen,
Sorry, I am not sure about that. However, you can check with shops supplying beads- because seamstress or tailors would buy from them and perhaps they could give you some details. All the best
Dear Dreamcatcher, the stuff you are looking for is a bit specific- would suggest you try searching in http://multifilla.com/ which I noted from their website, they do sell leather products.
Yin , thank you for the info (: Just wondering though , does Macy sells feathers too ?
Hi, Yin. Sorry to bother but I’ve been wanting to do something like this: http://www.ehow.com/how_8498087_sew-fur-ruff-hood.html and i’ve been trying to google around to see whether i can buy fur-like fabric onlike but to no avail. does macy sell them? if not, do you know of any place that sells faux fur ruff or anything similar to fur strips?
i forgot to add. Fluffy boa like these http://shop.hobbylobby.com/crafts-hobbies-and-fabric-crafts/feather-boas-clips-and-trims/?pg=3 would do too! I would really appreciate your help so that my journey to macy’s won’t be a waste. :/
Hi Rach, you can try to call Macy at 603-2078 1459. I had thought I’ve seen it but then again I am not so sure as I’ve also not been there for a while. However, the fluffy fur you are looking- if you refer to those worn by kids for can be found at hair wholesalers- those selling wholesale hair decorations like pins, clips. There are a few wholesalers located in Petaling Street- you need to walk around and explore the area.
Ok thanks for the help, Yin! I really appreciate it.
Ah i just wanted to leave another note of thanks! Went to Macy today and I found the fluffy feather boa! Had the same experience as you- i asked whether they sold any ruff/fabric that is furry and the saleslady told me no. went in to look around anyway and the saleslady kept following me. it was a bit annoying but I’m glad that I got what I wanted in the end 🙂
Hi Rach,
Thanks so much for sharing and glad you found what you have been looking for.
It’s been long while since I’ve been there and …and looks like things never change, heh.
Hi Yin, i would like to know if there’s any other feather supplier around besides Macy?
Macy sells their feather in wholesale price which is quite pricey, as I would only need a few for my projects 🙂
Thank U,
Tanish
Dear Tanish,
I am sorry, not sure where else unless some shops in Petaling Jaya where you can call and ask for the price. URL is here: https://visit-malaysia.yinteing.com/2010/03/26/craft-festive-supply-shop-in-pj-and-kl/
But not sure if convenient for you to get there as the transportation itself may cost a lot.
Hi Yin!
I was glad I found this site because I was in desperate need to find materials for a project in Dec. I went to Jalan TAR before to look for beads and craft supplies, although I did found some of them I must say that I’m not fully satisfied.
I’m planning to go to Petaling St. soon. Do you know where I can find fish-shaped beads and seashells? (it can be real seashell or acrylic ones, as long as they’re seashells). I’m not familiar with that area, so I’m hoping you could give me more info about it.
btw, I went to Macy in Sri Kembangan before. Although they don’t tail me around like the ones in KL does, their assistance is lacking. when I asked for something they’d just say “if its there, its there”.
I’m looking forward to your reply. I don’t know where else I should go to find the beads I need. You’re my last hope.
Thanks 🙂
Hi Fate,
Thanks for visiting. I know Macy have the seashell shaped- but it is made of plastic of various colors. I am not sure if they are what you are looking for.
Another alernative is to get the beads by buying a seashell wind chime or those hanging decorations that you may sometimes find in gift shops. Usually these already had holes punched in them (I did that years ago when I made hairclips- took the seashells off a wind chime).
As for fish shaped, I don’t remember any fish shaped in Macy- I’ve bought some fish shaped beads that is made of silverish materials years ago from Nam Thong- which is located about 2 or 3 doors away from Macy (they are starting to sell Xmas decos). But I am not sure if they still sell them anymore.
This is all the info I could provide for now. Hope you find what you are looking for.
Hi again!
Thanks for replying. I guess I have no other choice but to go to Macy and get those seashell beads now. I don’t know anywhere else that sell those seashell wind chimes. I’ve thought of that too, but I don’t know where I can get it.
I’m gonna need to buy some plain headbands too. I hope they still have it. Thanks very much for your info. First I need to google my way to go there. Last time I went there was when I was a kid. Wish me luck!
If you are thinking of buying online…becareful of Beading.my. I just had a bad experience buying from Beading.my. I bought pliers set (4 pliers) and faux pearls from them. Pliers were not stainless stain as they claimed. They were rusted, looked like used tools. Packing stated ‘Polished steel’ only. Somemore some of them were defaced on the surface. Faux pearls didn’t look as the photos. They are just plastic beads like abacus for kids. Some even melted on the surfaces. I commented on the product reviews…Guess what…the comments were not posted and they erased my account! They sent me an email with new password. I tried login with new and old passwords. Failed. Then i tried click Forgot Password. System said no such email address in their records. I used the same email address to register as new customer and it allowed. Of course, all pass records were not there. To avoid frustration, pls don’t shop there…
