Tun Dr Mahathir’s poem translation in English “Pada Yang Muda Kusematkan Harapan”

Merdeka

The poem by Tun Dr Mahathir, our 7th Prime Minister entitled “Pada Yang Muda Kusematkan Harapan” is very touching.  I have watched this video many times as I am deeply touched by his message. I have attempted to include an English translation of the poem as I am sure non Malay speaking audience may want to know the meaning of the poem.

If there is any errors or inaccuracies, I seek the reader’s kind forgiveness.

Note: This poem was published before the General Elections where what that was mentioned below at that time was still in present tense.

Pantun: Pada Yang Muda Kusematkan Harapan

Towards our youths I place my hope

Pada Yang Muda Kusematkan Harapan
Towards our youths I place my hope
Aku tidak perlu apa-apa kekayaan
I do not need any wealth
Aku mengerti umurku yang tua
I understand my age that is old
menunggu masa bertemu Ilahi
waiting for time to meet the Almighty
Aku boleh selesa diam tidak bersuara
I could be comfortably silent without voice
Supaya dijulang dan diangkat oleh mereka
So that I am in a pedestral and lifted by them
Sepanjang nafas dan usia
Throughout breath and age

Tetapi aku harus bersuara di akhir hayat
But I shall speak towards the end
Tanpa meminta apa-apa untuk diriku
Without asking for anything for myself
Malah tidak mengapa aku dihina dan dicerca
Whereas it is fine I am insulted and spoken about harshly
Semuanya kerana mataku melihat kemusnahan oleh pemimpin di puncak kuasa
All because my eyes saw the destruction by the leader at the peak of power

Yang rakus dan boros tidak terhalang
Where greed and extravagance are unstoppable
Menabur rasuah dan membeli orang
Spreading bribes and buying people over
Pada mata tuaku
To my aged eyes
Aku melihat hutang berbilion
I see debts amounting to billions
yang akan dibayar oleh cucu dan cicit rakyat
that would be paid by the people’s grandchildren and descendents

Aku melihat wang dipinjam hari ini
I see the money that were borrowed today
seperti tiada lagi hari esok
like there is no tomorrow
Semuanya untuk membeli segala undi
All to buy votes
untuk membeli segala kuasa
to acquire all powers

Pada senja hayatku
At the sunset of my life
Aku melihat apa yang dibina berdekad lama
I see what that were build decades long
dimusnahkan dengan wang yang bukan miliknya
destroyed with money that are not his

Dia menghidangkan wang haram untuk semua memujanya
He serves forbidden money for those who worshiped him
Dia menjanjikan bulan dan bintang
He promises the moon and the stars
kepada semua tanpa mengira harga
to all without counting the price
yang perlu dibayar oleh cucu cicit kita
that have to be paid by our grandchildren and their descendants
setelah dia tiada lagi bernafas
after he is no longer breathing

Segala wang haram
All forbidden money/funds
Disamun, dirompak dan dipinjam secara halus
Snatched, robbed and borrowed discretely
untuk dibayar oleh rakyat
to be paid by the people

Wang haram diselerakkan untuk suap dedak mereka yang tiada lagi nilai dan hormat diri
Forbidden funds are spread out to feed and bribe those who no longer have value and self-respect

Mereka menjual negara
They sell the country
Mereka menjual diri
They sell themselves
Mereka menjual maruah
They sell their pride
Mereka menjual agama
They sell their religion

Aku tidak dapat melakukan semua
I cannot accomplish all
Namun pada yang muda kusematkan harap
But towards the youth I place my hope
Untuk membetulkan Malaysia
To make Malaysia right
Dengan bersama, bersatu, berganding
Together, united and working hand in hand
Supaya ia tidak tenggelam
So that it does not sink
Dengan tangan kotor dan harganya dibayar
With (those) dirty hands and its price paid
oleh cucu dan cicit kita
by our grandchildren and their descendants
